Dr. Johnny Steve Han graduated from University of Illinois Dental School in 1988. He was commissioned into the U.S. Air Force Dental Corp for a one year residency and later served for 3 years active duty and 10 years reserve. During that period, he received Achievement Recognition for ’89, ’90, ’91, and ‘92. With 18 years of experience in the dental field, he had started and managed 2 private offices in California, and also served as a part time faculty at UCLA Dental School from 2000-2001.
Over the years, his observations of the seriousness of periodontal disease had caused him to search for an alternative device for patient’s soft tissue management. The result was a product called the Squirtbrush that not only cleans interdentally but also irrigate and disinfect the interproximal spaces simultaneously. Based on CRA (Clinical Research Associates) findings, the Squirtbrush was 91% rated as an excellent product for trial by dental professionals (May 2006 CRA Newsletter). With the approval of dental peers, The Squirtbrush is quickly becoming a part of the busy patients’ daily oral hygiene care.
Introduction of The Interproximal SquirtBrush
The innovation behind the Squirt Brush was to improve the problematic areas of all dental symptoms and diseases. The Squirt Brush provides maximum cleaning efficiency by using the interproximal brush with the attached refillable bottle to deliver a variety of mouth rinses for irrigation and disinfection. Patients will be benefit from using the Squirt Brush for their oral hygiene needs. It provides easy trouble-free usage and is conveniently packaged for portability. There is no equivalent product in the dental market; therefore, I went out of my way to invent the Squirt Brush. Mechanical debridement is essential to controlling plaque accumulation especially in cervical and interproximal areas. Subgingival irrigation has also been proven to aid in reducing the levels of periodontal pathogens. The design of the Squirt Brush allows the accomplishment of both. It delivers any type of irrigant to the brush head allowing simultaneous debridement and local delivery of the irrigant. It could potentially be a useful adjunct in controlling the periodontal disease process.
In the treatment of active periodontal disease, scaling and root planning is essential for the removal of bacteria and plaque from the subgingival areas. After the dentist performs this procedure, patients are generally required to maintain the treated areas with proper oral hygiene on a daily basis. For this reason, the interproximal brush can be used to brush straight into those areas. However, the negative aspect is that the brush is dry and without medicament. Therefore, bacteria and germs cannot be cleansed. Only mouthwash can treat and disinfect bacteria. Another problem is mouthwash cannot penetrate deep in-between the teeth and gums where periodontitis is most prevalent. That’s why we’ve created the Interproximal Squirt Brush. The Squirt Brush was introduced to maximize cleaning efficiency for difficult to maintain areas: the interproximal area around back teeth, fixed partial denture, and implants. The Squirt Brush also functions to simultaneously brush and apply chlorohexidine mouth rinse to those areas that need cleansing the most. A combination of brushing and irrigating of the interproximal areas can greatly increase patient compliance during the maintenance periods.

With the past experience in the dental office, I have seen many patients with the needs to control and clean the bacteria in gum areas, oral braces, and hard-to-reach area. In the past, their dentists would require them to use medicated mouth wash or regular mouth wash to clean their affected area with the combination of the interproximal brush. But, the brush is dry, so the mouth wash can not directly penetrate deep into the gum and hard-to-reach areas. Only mouth wash can treat and disinfect bacteria. So, in the practice of chair side, dentists suggest hygienists to dip the brush with medicated mouth wash while treating the affected areas. It not only wastes a lot of time, but also the mouth wash is not evenly distributed into the affected areas. It is also not convenient because the preparations of many tools, such as mouth wash and brushes. And it also needs the help of third-party, so when the patients are at home, it is not easy to do it by themselves. Base on these inconveniences, we wanted to benefit the patients with our new hygiene tools. That is why we have created the interproximal Squirt Brush to aid the cleaning of those hard-to-reach interproximal areas. The Squirt Brush combines the mouth wash with the brush in practice at the same time. So, when you squeeze the tube, you can brush, clean and disinfect your gum areas. And, it is very convenience that you can practice it at home with your own mouth wash, such as fluoride mouth wash, deep clean mouth wash, alcohol-free mouth wash, and any mouth wash that your dentist suggests. The brush can also easily replace. For these reasons, the Squirt Brush is very convenient to use because it functions to simultaneously brush and apply mouth wash to those areas that need cleansing the most. It is very unique and small since you can bring it when you go anywhere and travel.
